Psalm 51:12

A clean heart create for me, God; renew in me a steadfast spirit.

And later on it says

Lord, open my lips; my mouth will proclaim your praise…My sacrifice, God, is a broken spirit; God, do not spurn a broken, humbled heart.

I don’t think we come here today with broken spirits, but I do think we approach this weekend with clean hearts and humbled spirits, ready to do God’s will.

I hope all of you are feeling peaceful this morning…the rush of preparation is over and now is the time. Keep in mind, God called you to this weekend, to this time, to your ministry. God knew what he was doing, so don’t doubt him. Have no anxiety at all…don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything.

And remember, this weekend is not about you…how well you lead your table, how good the meals taste, whether we finish on time. This is about God. And it’s about creating the environment in which God can work miracles with these invitees. We are his hands and his voice and his feet, but it is his heart that we heed.

Does anyone have any last minute questions?

Then I invite you to spend a few quiet moments with our Lord in prayer…then as you file out, I will bless each of you.

Co-Spiritual Director blesses each team member individually as they leave chapel.
7:30 am    Invitees arrive. Team greets invitees in the parking lot or at the entrance.  Assist with carrying baggage and opening doors.

Show them to the room for secured storage,

Ask them to keep medications/sweater, etc that they will want easy access to all day.  Help them to find their name tags and then encourage them (along with their families) to go to the dining area for refreshments.   ** No one should be left standing alone!

Co-Spiritual Director and/or Spiritual Director Welcome

Spiritual Director -  Prayer or Scripture

Welcome to the chapel

We’ll spend some time in here this weekend, and we hope this is a prayerful, reverent place for you.

We’ll also spend some time with Scripture over the weekend, so I’d like to start us off with a few words of Scripture.

1 John 1: 5-7

Walking in the light

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

I ask all of you, this weekend, to think about walking in the light, walking in the light of Jesus Christ, letting him be a lamp unto our feet and a light to our paths.

OR

Isaiah 6: 8

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?”

“Here I am,” I said; “Send me!”

We were all called to be here today, at this time and in this place, to continue our faith journey, to listen to God’s voice and to respond with joy. I ask all of you, this weekend, to think about where and how God is calling you, and how often you can respond with a heartfelt “Send me!”

Lay Director  Announce moving to Martha/Mary room

8:25 am    Father and/or Co-Spiritual Director Opening remarks in Witness Room

Co-Spiritual Director mentions about prayer

& “invites everyone to ask the Lord for one special favor during the weekend.”

(see manual for specifics-This may be done in the chapel at the beginning---)

Good morning!

We are so glad you are here!

Feel free to turn around in your chairs, get comfortable.

Some of you may be feeling a bit of anxiety right now (well, maybe a lot)…you’re not quite sure what you’ve gotten yourself into. Just trust that God brought you here, so sit back and put all those worries in God’s hands. Or maybe you are just anticipating a weekend away from all the craziness that is every day life. Whichever, we invite you to sit back and enjoy!

It wasn’t so long ago that those of us on the team were in exactly your chairs, wondering what this weekend would be like…and we chose to come back, so it can’t be all bad!

Now, to explain your role in the weekend, let me read a bit of scripture.  This comes from Luke 10: 38-42.

38As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. 40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"
41"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, 42but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

Today and tomorrow, we invite you to sit at the feet of Jesus. You get to be Mary…we will be Martha. You don’t have to do anything, fix anything, worry about anything…leave that to God and to us. So take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the moment!!

(slow down)

You might like to know a little bit about Christ Renews His Parish. This program was started in 1969 in a Catholic parish in Ohio by a priest who wanted to meet the needs for renewal and deepening of faith right in the parish setting. He wanted to create a time to experience personal conversion along with building a Christian community. We hope that’s what you’ll find during this weekend.

We’re not here to teach…but to share with you what this team has been learning about the good news of the Gospel. That good news is that God loves us and He invites us to a deep and lasting daily personal friendship with him. He cares about the details of our lives. And we’ve learned that we can talk to him about anything.

St. Paul invites us to pray without ceasing. We are children of God, therefore we have immediate access to the Father. You’ll have many opportunities to pray during the next two days, and I invite you to ask the Lord for one special favor during the weekend. You don’t have to share that request with anyone, just hold it in your heart and pray on it during our time together.  So let’s pause for a quiet moment for each of us to talk to the Lord and begin asking for that special request.

Pause

Co-Spiritual Director

Philippians 4: 4-9

Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: Rejoice. Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Prayer is a special conversation we can have with God. Many of us are as comfortable with prayer as we are talking to a close friend; for others of us, it feels awkward and stiff. I grew up with the idea that prayer was about asking God for things, a list of wants. But I’ve been slowly learning that what I really want is not the things of God, or a favor from God, but God himself. Less self-focus, more God-focus. Less about me, more about him. Or as it says in John 3:30: He must increase; I must decrease.

Then, our prayer becomes a conversation with a friend, a desire to understand what God wants of us, rather than what we want of God.

I’d like to close this morning with a little prayer from St. Teresa of Avila:

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices

Now let’s all say the Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Thank you, NAME, for sharing with us how God has shown his tender loving care in your life. Isn’t it incredible how often God is there for us, showering us with his loving care.

I wish I could somehow explain how special each one of you is, and how much we care about you. We’ve been praying for you for months. You are precious. We believe God brought you here, at this time, in this place, to experience this weekend. And we are so thankful for that!

I pray that you are beginning to feel a greater awareness of the love God feels for you, and the comfort he can bring to your heart.

He loves you!

These weekends don’t happen without a lot of prayer. Christ Renews His Parish through prayer…before, during and after, extending his love to us through his people.

You may not know this, but we prayed for each of you before the weekend.

There have been people praying for us while we are here.

There was a prayer service Friday evening and another Holy Hour last night during our Reconciliation. During each witness, team members and people from other CRHP weekends have been in the chapel praying. Others have been praying throughout the weekend. Many have candles lit in their homes as reminders to pray for us. Can’t you feel the prayers? Can’t you see God working for you in your own life?

Some CRHP friends from other parishes have also been praying for us…I’d like to share a few of their good wishes and thoughts.

Read any letters from other parishes

Now we’d like to share a more tangible sign of the love others feel for you.

Silence- reflect personally on how each one can see God’s loving care in own life Instrumental Music - ______________________________________

1:15 pm  Co-Spiritual Director reflects on Discipleship–explains personal commitment

HAND OUT PERSONAL COMMITMENT SHEETS AT THE BEGINNING

Thank you, NAME, for sharing your journey of discipleship with us. I can’t imagine a better model of faith and service.

Discipleship isn’t just for perfect people. Look at Christ’s disciples….were they perfect?

(mention Peter who denied, Thomas who had to see to believe)

It’s not only for saints, it’s for all of us…to be a disciple, you only need to be:

AVAILABLE

FLEXIBLE

TEACHABLE

DEPENDABLE

As we reflect on the miracles of graces, the undeserved favor we’ve received, we consider:

-       the call to follow him more closely

-       the call to become more aware of his work in our daily lives

-       that he has chosen each of us

-       that he is totally committed to us

In the Christ Renews His Parish Manual, it says being a follower of Jesus is not a matter of birth, but of decision. Many of us were baptized as infants, but it is as adults that we make the choice, every day, to follow Christ. It’s a choice we make!

The CRHP manual goes on to say that a true personal commitment to Jesus as the center of our lives is impossible without the gift of God. It flows from a change of heart, as I give up control of my life and surrender it to Jesus as my Way, my Truth and my Life.

Following Jesus means we become more like Him, as we get to know Him better. Jesus’ challenge to His disciples is to be as he is…totally committed to do the will of the Father.

You all know the story of the loaves and fishes. The disciples were really worried…they didn’t know what to do. Jesus told them to start with what they had…they did their part and Jesus did his!

That’s what He will do for us as we offer up to him what we have and who we are. At this time, I’d like you to take a look at the Personal Commitment Sheet. Please write your name on it, and then we will take some quiet time for you to write your own personal commitment to Christ (you don’t have to turn this in, it’s yours). You will be asked to share your commitment at Mass with the priest.

If you finish before others, please use the time to pray quietly or read your Bibles while others finish up.

Facilitators hand out personal commitment sheets

Invitees fill out personal commitment sheets

Co-Spiritual Director reflects on call to Evening of Discipleship

As we follow Him more closely, we realize that faith becomes a shared experience. The renewal weekend is the spark that lights a fire. If that spark is to continue, it will be you who keep the candle burning. God is calling people from this group to give the gift of a CRHP weekend to a new group of women this coming spring.

As you noticed in the letter that you received prior to this weekend, there will be a meeting to “wrap up” this experience. It will be:

Day/Time:  DATE and TIME, location

I invite you to prayerfully consider what God is calling you to do. These weekend experiences don’t happen unless women like you feel called to share the experience with another group of women. There are no professional CRHP putter onners! At the Evening of Discipleship you’ll have a chance to share your renewal experiences of the past two days, and decide whether you want to make a commitment to being part of the team that will present this weekend in the spring. At the end of the evening, we will have a team commissioning in the church for those who are called to that ministry.

At this time I invite the team members at your table to share their experiences of discipleship, team formation and ministry.

Table leaders share their experience of team formation and ministry at their tables.

1:35 pm    Co-Spiritual Director or Father — Preparation for Last Supper Mass

We’ll now be going back to the church for a celebration of the Eucharist. 1Corinthians11:23-26 has the oldest account of the Eucharist that we celebrate:

For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread and after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.

We are called to meet a Jesus who loves us, feeds us with his words and with his intimate loving presence. The call is to meet Jesus in the Eucharist. This is its very aim: it must be celebrated as an encounter of Christ with his community. Here he reminds us of our Christian vocation and commitment, consoles us amid the trials of our journey, strengthens us in our fight against the powers of evil, encourages us to live according to his Gospel and awakens in us deep longing for his coming in glory.

We’ll be celebrating the liturgy from Holy Thursday, the Last Supper Mass. I invite you all to proceed to the church, sit in the chairs on the altar. Please take your Personal Commitment sheet with you.

During Communion, you will be invited to read your Personal Commitment to Father before you receive the Body of Christ.

Co-Spiritual Director (share scripture/prayer)

I’d like to end this afternoon where we started…was it only 32 hours ago?

1 John 1: 5-7

Walking in the light

”This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

You are the light of the world…let your light shine for yourselves, for your families, for this parish and for our world.

Isaiah 6: 8

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?”

“Here I am,” I said; “Send me!”

I hope during this retreat you’ve had a chance to listen to the voice of the Lord, and that you will willingly go where He sends you, as you minister to your families, this parish and our world.

Before we go, I’d like to thank again all the Marthas this weekend:

NAMES

Special thanks to

also thank anyone else who helped in the kitchen or somewhere else

Sometimes people say it’s hard to go back go the real world from here. I like to think this is the real world, and our challenge is to take it with us everywhere we go!

But do keep in mind that those you return to have not spent the weekend here and may not share your enthusiasm. Be gentle on your re entry and watch your expectations!!

Take time to pray and read Scripture…God makes it worth our effort! And it will help you keep alive the wonderful feelings you’ve experienced this weekend.
